The Çukurova Sequential Aquaculture Model (CUSAM): A Climate-Adapted Strategy for Reservoir Aquaculture

Abstract:   (5 Views)
Climate change is increasingly affecting freshwater aquaculture through rising water temperatures, altered hydrological patterns, and greater environmental variability. These challenges highlight the need for adaptive production strategies that improve resource utilization and enhance the resilience of aquaculture systems. This study presents the Çukurova Sequential Aquaculture Model (CUSAM), a climate-adaptive production approach developed and experimentally evaluated in Seyhan Dam Lake, Türkiye. The model integrates rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production during the cold-water period (10–19 °C) with blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) production during the warm-water period (25–30 °C), using the same floating cage infrastructure to enable sequential production of two commercially important species within a single year. Experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of sequential production under the seasonal thermal conditions of the reservoir and showed more continuous utilization of cage infrastructure across the annual production cycle. By matching species to seasonally suitable temperature conditions, CUSAM converts seasonal thermal variability from a production constraint into an opportunity for strategic species succession. The model can potentially reduce infrastructure idle periods, increase production flexibility, and improve the annual utilization of reservoir resources. Although developed under the environmental conditions of the Çukurova region, CUSAM may be applicable to Mediterranean and subtropical reservoir ecosystems experiencing comparable seasonal temperature patterns and climate-related production constraints. The model provides a practical framework for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of freshwater cage aquaculture under changing climatic conditions.
